Get it wrong and your time will be repeatedly wasted. At worst, well, you don’t need me to tell you what could happen. 

One thing I know at Elite Courtesans is outcalls. And I know how to do them safely. So for those of you starting out in the industry, I’ve listed some pointers below to help you deal with your phone calls to accept outcall bookings safely and minimise time wasters as much as possible.

1. Don’t ever answer calls from withheld numbers. In fact, go a step further and download a blocker app for your mobile phone – you can then block withheld calls without ever being disturbed. The reason every escort on the planet lists ‘no private numbers’ on her website is because the men who hide behind them will waste your time.
2. If you have a policy of only accepting bookings via a phone call, stick to it and refrain from answering text messages from unknown customers. Have a copy and paste message you can politely send new customers reaching you by text, kindly asking them to call for a booking / pointing them to your booking page.
3. Be very aware of those who call briefly and then bombard you with texts. Over dramatic, rushed and last minute booking requests are known tactics by time wasters. When one asks for a 2hr booking and then quickly agrees to an overnight, all expenses paid, very short notice – big alarm bells.
4. Don’t take bookings over email. Really? Yes, really. Email is an outlay for long winded communication with no sense of urgency. You ought to channel your communication so they are dealt with swiftly and succinctly for all. Save your email address for regulars who may wish to send you gift vouchers or flight details for your next booking!
5. At Elite I always operated within sensible hours and have found that queries sent after 10pm / 11pm are often from men who may be drunk, high or both. You may wish to work late hours but you surely don’t want these customers. If you choose to work late, I strongly recommend you to accept advance bookings only and for the love of God… get a deposit!
6. Lastly, late night visits to hotels can raise eyebrows at the front desk and cause problems, especially as doors often get locked.

How to spot a time waster on the phone?

I have been lucky to have had customer facing roles on my jobs prior to escorting. When working independently common sense and previous experience helped, but none the less when you’re new this can be daunting.

Gents who are genuinely interested in arranging a booking, will work with you to achieve what they want. They will be upfront with their information and any reluctance to give you their real name should be seen as a red flag.

Some tell-tale signs the call should be terminated:

• Is he going into excessive detail about outfits or services? Did he initially ask for a 1 hour booking and then accept without question that the minimum booking time for his area is 3 hours?
• Has he asked for an overnight booking, money no object (not always time wasters but treat with caution)?
• Be aware of anyone suggesting a first meet at a hotel which would make verification difficult (Travelodge hotels, for example), bed and breakfast, halls of residence, army barracks, in his office or at ‘a friend’s’ house?
• Has he told you he has a big cock and is amazing in bed?

In my experience, genuine customers have the utmost respect for your time, and do not keep you on the phone longer than a quick chat and to arrange the details. Anyone who yaps on for ages, bin em!

SMS etiquette: Ignore messages with distasteful language or tone. Messages containing “Hello baby” or simply “Hi” or “Are you available”, often lead to nothing. If you are unable to get from client what they want, where what time and how long in less than 3 messages – ignore.

If you are new to escorting, I strongly recommend you to consider phone conversations over SMS.

Remember, not everyone who is a time waster knows they are a time waster. Some men are just complete fantasists who will pull out of the booking when the time comes close. If you get an inkling that you’re dealing with one of those (overly nervous, hesitant etc), don’t bother, or get a good deposit at the very least.

Verifying identities

Set yourself with a business account so you can safely receive deposits from customers. A deposit by bank transfer is a fail proof way of verifying a customer’s identity. Whatever name or company name appears on your bank statement should match the one given by the customer at the time of the booking.

Not to mention that deposits cut the chances of a cancellation to almost zero.

Genuine customers will not hesitate in providing a copy of their ID and proof of residence. Stick to your guns and do not agree to a booking with a man who is reluctant to follow your safety guidelines.

Regarding names, musical sounding concoctions such as ‘Steve Smith’ or ‘Andy Anderson’ should put you on your guard. And if anyone asks why you need their surname or real name, hang up and stick them on a blacklist. The good ones never ask.

Outcalls to private residences.

For all new escorts, outcalls to a stranger’s home appears the scariest. Perform your due diligence with their ID check. If all is well and they sounded lovely on the phone, you can then proceed with the the following:

For outcalls to private residences, take his full name, address and landline telephone number. Check Electoral role on sites such as 192.com. The person may be listed as a company director? (this will also bring up directory enquiries and info from companies house). Once verified, don’t forget to call the client on his landline, or have him call you, to confirm that he is actually at that address.

Of course, life isn’t always that easy. Clients can opt-out of the online electoral role AND their landlines can be ex-directory. Even worse, nowadays most people don’t even have a working landline. In this scenario, I always Google his numbers – mobile and landline – using all different variations 01234555555, 01234 555555 and 01234 555 555. Those spaces do make a difference in Google! Sometimes you will score a hit – a business website, advert, whatever (must be a good source) that verifies his name and address. Don’t forget to check out his email address too, if you have it.

Failing that and on the *rare* occasion a deposit hasn’t been provided, at Elite I will ALWAYS get proof of address and a copy of their ID. This means asking him to scan in or photograph a bill and email it to us (a phone bill showing the landline or mobile is ideal). Driving license showing the same address, or a copuy of their passport.

Genuine clients do not mind doing this. I can’t remember the last time I was ever refused. Don’t feel that as an independent escort you won’t get away with being so ‘demanding’ – you will – and it might just be your saving grace.

Outcalls to Bel Air?

Don’t forget to verify with the customer if safe off street parking is available. You may also want to verify if the area is somewhere you will be comfortable parking and being around late at night when you depart your date.

Use Google street view to check the area. Rightmove and Zoopla to check house prices. If you feel the area would be unsafe to visit, suggest a hotel meet instead.

Visiting hotels

Hotels may appear much easier and safer however, this is where most of our time has been wasted in the past and before the introduction of deposits. Even if a customer is paying for his hotel room using cash (and gives a random name for his reservation), a credit card is still required to reserve a room. This is an important fact to know because in the event of a serious problem which could involve the police, the customer will be traceable. This is why it is important to accept bookings from bigger chain hotels only (more on hotels later).

In any case, you still want the client’s full name (with ID checked with deposit and / or ID), hotel details and his reservation number (if it’s an advance booking). If he’s already in the hotel, and it’s the day of the meeting, you’ll need his room number.

The first rule of hotel bookings is: never leave home until the client has checked in and you have called his room to verify that he is there. Otherwise, always check the hotel reservation. For short notice hotel bookings, I will always confirm the name the client gave me with reception before being put through to the room: ‘Hi, I’d like to speak to Mr Andy Davies, I think he’s in room 212, can you double-check that’s right before putting me through?’

For advance bookings to hotels, as well as ringing the room on the day, I will always call the hotel to check the reservation beforehand. I don’t think I’ve ever once been asked who I am – receptionists just assume I’m the client’s wife or his PA. So just something like: ‘Hi, I’m just calling to double-check you have Mr Boris Johnson booked in for Sept 1st?’ No justifications needed – sound confident, don’t talk too much and make sure you have the correct spelling.

I’d always recommend calling again on the day of the booking to check the client hasn’t cancelled his reservation. If he has, you can put yourself back on the rota for that night with hopefully enough time to spare to find a replacement client!

If your customer paid a a deposit, rest assured he will be there waiting with the bells on!

A note about hotels

Avoid Travelodge hotels for your first bookings – specially if you are unable to get a deposit. They don’t have telephones in the rooms. Always check with Premier Inns (hit and miss) and other budget hotels that they have phones in rooms before fully accepting a booking there. Also, if you’ve never heard of the hotel the client is proposing, check it out online. If it’s 7 bedroom family run hotel or a run down bolt-hole for dossers and drug addicts, AVOID.

Trust your Instincts

Instinct is the best protection you have. Always trust it. Hopefully, if you’ve marketed yourself correctly, you’ll never be short of work. But if you do find yourself running low, never be tempted to compromise on your safety.

Yes, Adultwork is a good website and yes it’s made setting up as an escort easy – but there are negatives. When the website goes down or decides to implement changes that impact you, you aren’t going to get any work. I’ve seen ladies moaning on Twitter about taking the day off because Adultwork is offline. Madness. Imagine one day it doesn’t come back? I also see tweets from genuine escorts with an established Adultwork profile complaining that their page has been deleted for no apparent reason. Problems like this are worsened by the fact that the only way to contact Adultwork is via a website form (they list a company address in Belize, another in Gibraltar) which may or may not be answered. Last but not least, there are an inordinately high amount of time wasters that trawl Adultwork looking for escorts, and many wonderful punters out there that don’t use the website.

My advice – get your own website to run in tandem with Adultwork and other social media platforms. Google the main keywords for your area (e.g escort Bristol, escort in Bristol, Bristol escorts, Bristol escorts, independent escorts in Bristol) and add yourself to the directories that come up on page 1 of Google

Get some decent photos

Woe betide the escort who tries to promote herself with crappy photos! Whether that’s a black and white close up of her left tit, a provocative school uniform pose next to a washing machine and piles of dirty laundry, or God forbid extreme close-ups of her most private parts. Turn up on time, show them a great time, and don’t leave early! The escorts that make the most money have clients who book them time and time again. If you aren’t getting regulars, something is wrong.

Lose that husband or boyfriend

Not in real life of course, just as far as your clients are concerned. You’ll have to me here. Your boyfriend / recent engagement / fabulous husband should not feature anywhere in your marketing strategy. Not even during careless pillow talk.

Treat your escort business like any other

Like every other business in the world, with escorting you get out what you put in. Provide a high level of customer service, be organised and market yourself well (advertising may not always be free). Look at what else is on offer in your area and do one better.

Invest in your future

There is a very high chance that if you have the right look, the right personality AND you manage your escort business well, you will never come close to earning the sort of money you do as an escort again in your life. I’m not going to go into figures of what’s possible, but it’s rather a lot. Invest in the future. Pay off your debts. Buy a house. Live mortgage free. Travel the world. Put your kids through private school. Don’t squander it basically. If you start doing that, you’ll never get out.

Loose lips sink ships

Keep your chosen profession to yourself. Don’t tell anybody unless you absolutely have to, for example so they can check you in and out of bookings. Think carefully about showing your face in photos. You may not care what people think now, but that could all change in the future. Remember – you do not need to show your face to make lots of money.

Why am I talking about age in this blog? I suspect there is an assumption when it comes to the sex industry that firstly, all the punters seek very young women (say 18-25), and secondly, that to be be a sex worker with any real success you have to be ‘young’. Condoms

Obviously. But not just condoms. I would carry regular (standard) sized condoms, large condoms and small condoms. Some ladies have accumulated debt they need to clear, some want a deposit for a house or to clear their mortgage, some want to put their children through private school, some want money to travel the world or to fund their new business and some just need to make ends meet. When the money motivator disappears, so does the lady.

What’s the typical age of a sex worker?

There isn’t one. Outside our agency, there are women working at 18 and there are women working in their 60s. It’s worth noting that we haven’t represented ladies under 21 since 2009, and that at the start of my agency I didn’t tend to represent ladies over 35. A big mistake on my part, since ladies 35+ have turned out to be the best and most popular. At this point in time if a hot 45 year applied and I liked her, she’d get the job just as easily as a 25 year old. And she’d command the same rates.

Are all sex workers unemployed and broke?

If they’re sex workers they can’t be unemployed, because sex work is a job. Generally though, it is a secondary job, or at least it is for over 80% of the women I have represented. Here are the top primary occupations of the women that have worked via Elite, in no particular order:

When I remembered the ladies that we have represented, I was struck with just how varied their primary occupations were. Not included in the above list is a, children’s entertainer, horse riding instructor, pastry chef, a legal executive, a paramedic, an estate agent, a lady that ran a cleaning business, a social worker and a journalist.

Do sex workers need to look a certain way?

Nope. Though obviously it helps to be well groomed and slimmer girls will find it easier than bigger girls to make money. White girls tend to be more popular than black girls, blondes more so than brunettes, and in the UK having English as a first language is a big bonus. While busty women are most popular, boob size isn’t quite as important as you’d think it might be, and as i’ve already mentioned above, neither is age. Irregardless, I have looked into boobage anyway!

Of all the ladies that worked as part of Elite Courtesans, circa 40% had an enhanced bust. The most common bust size overall is a C cup, quickly followed by D cup bust. Bust size however has varied from A cup to a whopping FF!

Are all sex workers single?

Many escorts are married women and women with long-term partners – a large percentage overall. Very rarely does the woman try and hide their work from their partner, so the vast majority work with their partner’s blessing.

Of course, no escort in her right mind should tell you her marital status or turn up wearing her wedding ring. I’ve lost count of the amount of clients that have told me during bookings that they wouldn’t want to meet a girl who was attached in the real world. You can come up with the reasons for that yourself.

A gross misunderstanding surrounding sex workers seems to be the assumption that they MUST be single, because who would want them? As a sex worker, and knowing many sex workers, I can tell you finding men who accept your job is not an issue.

So there you have it – the facts. It seems apt to post this blog around International Women’s Day, because generally, the women I meet in the sex industry are some of the most amazing women I encounter in life, full stop. It takes a big pair of bollocks to make the jump into sex work, and it takes hard work and determination to be a real success. I know women who have made hundreds of thousands of pounds being smart in an industry that threatens shame, alienation and even criminalisation if their true profession were to come out. Sex workers are by and large entrepreneurs, not desperados.

I couldn’t be a doctor and tell a person they are dying of cancer. I couldn’t be a firewoman to rescue a child from a car wreck and tell their parents their son is dead. But as an escort, I could relate to someone totally strange to me and make them feel like a million dollars, whether they look my Grandad or Brad Pitt.

If you’re the sort of woman who scoffs that you’d rather scrub toilets than become a prostitute, my view is this: more fool you!

I was quite surprised how evocative the experience was, that is why I am writing this, I have had a rather varied and undulating sex life since going into recovery and getting divorced some 7 years ago, please bear with me as this is very relevant.

The point of this piece isn’t about recovery, what emerged from that process was a very different man, one that rapidly became a company owning single father of three boys, a responsible man, one with other priorities, I found it hard to have a social or sex life and there was little time for enjoyment, I missed that and I missed sex. I headed towards a more karmic and spiritual path.

I travel a lot with work and was in Birmingham a week ago, alone in my hotel I went to Google to look for an escort, the sites looked cheap, the photos unconvincing but the rates were good, after finding and booking a girl, she arrived an hour and a half late, it wasn’t who or what I had hoped for, too impersonal, too rushed. I arrive at the hotel and saunter in as if I own the place.  People glance my way and the professional staff smile. I’m titillated by the fact no one knows what I’m doing here, I feel like I’m on a sexy top secret mission. I subtly locate the lifts and select the button for the top floor.  I strut down the corridor, by now I’m so ready and willing to play. I work in the social field anyway and have been trained to work with vulnerable people, from addicts to offenders, to sex workers , however, escorting never really crossed my mind  when I was looking for solutions for my difficulties. Until one night in January, after reaching a desperate point with expenses and debt, a thought floated in my mind: ‘’ how about escorting?’’. Light bulb moment. Elite Courtesans website was what impressed me most, it looked professional, well maintained and serious. The immediate vibe I got from it was that you were in good hands, both as an Elite representative and as a client. So I contacted them, and my wonderful journey started.

Lisa was very informative and reassuring, she was professional and knowledgeable when I met her for our interview.  But nothing prepares you for your first client.

Many months passed and many lessons were learnt, through various experiences with men of all walks of life (but also, from fellow Elite ladies). I have put together a little list of lessons that my clients have taught me, maybe there is something here that can be useful at times. Discard what doesn’t work . I will not be offended.

Lessons from clients were:

Men that contact us share one common characteristic: they suffer from loneliness and lack of meaningful connection with a significant other. Yes, some may have children with whom they share wonderful times, but yet, as men, they feel disconnected, sometimes underappreciated by their spouse if they have one. So when they meet us, at some point through the relationship, it would be good to focus on what experience do we offer them, aside from sex? Does this man feel better after interacting with me? Does he feel listened to? Are you displaying curiosity about him, are you inviting conversations or do you make it all about you? Yes, they will want to discover you, they will be curious about your origin , your life outside Elite etc, but ultimately, this experience that they generously pay for is for them to enjoy, for them to feel special and for them to want more of. This doesn’t mean that you should be very submissive and secretive, or act as a robot. It means work your charms to return the conversation to the client, remain slightly mysterious, leave them guessing. Elicit from them neutral topics like travel, sports, arts, etc  and definitely don’t invade a client’s private life if he is showing signs that he would rather not go there. We are entertainers indirectly (we don’t bring monkeys and create a small circus for the clients), but we are there to make the client feel special. A clever anecdote, a good joke, some trivia, some sports knowledge here and there, help to create a fun date.

If you have a job, you will prepare for it, everyday. You don’t just turn up (ok, there will be some days when you just turn up and hope for the best), but escorting is not one of those jobs. Yes, you prepare for a date physically. Yes, you wear your best clothes and your sexiest lingerie, prepare your instruments, but do you do your emotional preparation, too? How do you set your mood for the date? If you had a bad day at your day job, if you found out some bad news an hour before your date, what do you? How do you manage that? Working in a social care field has helped me here, but having some mental preparation is what works all the time. I usually like to be alone when I get ready for my date, no partner, no animal, no kid, no phone calls for an hour. In that time, I visualise myself and my date in a bubble that is impermeable, nothing can impact the two hours that we have together. If time allows, I may even meditate or sit quietly for 10 minutes, listening to some guided meditation videos on how to calm your mind. When I drive to a client, I allow 10 minutes of the journey to be spent on me thinking of the pressing bad news or the stressful day, but when the 10 minutes are up, I turn the music on and wear the good mood like you would wear a coat. You have to put it on. Clients don’t want negative, grumpy, pensive, dissociative dates. Seriously. We must protect our clients from our problems, they are not theirs to know. Also, some older clients who may automatically slip into the parenting role (ask me about Eric Berne’s Transactional Analysis if you need more info), will be curious and want to rescue us or advise us or jump to solutions, but remember, if you already shared part of that with your client , simply thank him for his advice and quickly tip toe out of that conversation.

This is a difficult one to juggle, especially if a client becomes a regular and conversations become less formal , boundaries blur. Some clients who have lost their carer role (for example, their kids left home, partner died, client is retired), will want to be useful, will want to help you, will want to offer a solution and temporarily gain that rescuer role,  but there is always a price to pay. In my view, in their eyes, we should always remain slightly mysterious, like a puzzle you’re not bored of after knowing all its pieces.

There is no loyalty in this game. Sorry ladies. There really isn’t. No matter what your dates tell you, no matter what they promise you, you will be replaced. It’s part of the game. It is here that you need to have a very strong sense of self. It’s not because of you. It’s nothing to do with your humanely imperfections. No matter who you are, the client has no obligation to be exclusive. Men are curious about what’s on the market. They will want to try all the flavours of the ice cream in the display. And why not? Wouldn’t you? When they promise you they will book you again and again, smile and remember that it’s unwise to expect that. But smile anyway. If they do book you again and again, that’s fantastic. If they don’t and you have taken their words for it, you’ll have made a beautiful cocktail with the following ingredients: jealousy  and possessiveness, disappointment and bitterness, and … self doubt. Yuck!! All that could be avoided if you keep your mind clear and you remember the rules of the game. Take it all with a pinch of salt. And smile.

There will be new girls who become flavour of the month. They will be praised and praised.  They will have excellent availability and a more urgent need for cash. So inevitably, they will prioritise dates, far or close. Which means their names will be mentioned  and they will appear to be promoted more. Don’t worry. You haven’t been forgotten . Some men prefer blondes. Some don’t. Some like big boobs. Some like big bums. Some like long hair, some don’t.  Some people can only afford this a few times a year. Some periods can be busy and some can be super quiet. Don’t assume it’s something you’re not doing right. Don’t let your mind play tricks on you.  It’s important to re-calibrate your thoughts and remain anchored in your context. Remind yourself why you chose this path, ask yourself if you can handle it and what are your weaknesses. Is it competitiveness? Is it a feeling of inadequacy? Do you feel you’re good enough?

Your sense of self should not depend on your bookings and always remember, clients are men. They are clients not partners. That says it all. And… they are men. Men with money who want to try all the flavours and experience all there is to experience. It is not about you, here. It’s the game .

When you’re off for whatever reasons, stay off. Stay off the  twitter, stay off the spying. You have the responsibility to rest. To meet your friends. To nurture other relationships in your life. Read the books (not only the ones from the clients, but the ones you choose), have fun, travel. Your presence in the industry is not eternal. One day, your circumstances will change. Maybe your relationship status will be in conflict with your path, maybe you’ll relocate abroad, maybe you’ll simply want to try something else, or maybe you’ll be fed up. Maybe your health won’t allow you to do this. Maybe you’ll win the lottery (we need a back up plan for this, though). Like everything in life, it’s a temporary stage. Make the most of it and enjoy the game. Know the rules.
